What have you sacrificed? Polish translations of songs in Jesus Christ Superstar: a comparative case study

Niniejsza praca ma na celu porównanie dwóch polskich przekładów wybranych piosenek z anglojęzycznego musicalu Jesus Christ Superstar. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy rozdział zawiera przegląd literatury w zakresie tematów związanych z pracą. Zostały w nim omówione specyfika tłumaczenia musicali wykonywanych na scenie, historia teatru muzycznego na świecie i w Polsce, tłumaczenie opery jako medium podobnego do musicalu, wyzwania, jakie stawia przed tłumaczem tekst musicalu oraz metoda badawcza, według której została przeprowadzona analiza w rozdziale trzecim. Drugi rozdział służy jako opis metodologii badania. Zawierają się w nim szczegółowy opis badania wykonanego na potrzeby niniejszej pracy oraz opis analizowanych w niej danych z uwzględnieniem krótkiej charakterystyki musicalu Jesus Christ Superstar wraz z jego historią w Polsce oraz wyjaśnieniem sposobu działalności Studia Accantus jako autora jednego z badanych przekładów. Ostatni, trzeci rozdział, zawiera analizę przekładów wybranych piosenek z musicalu przy użyciu wybranych kryteriów badawczych. Główny wynik z badania jest taki, że analizowane przekłady nie różniły się znacząco między sobą pod względem wyżej wymienionych kryteriów, a raczej miejscowo używano w nich różnych technik tłumaczeniowych bądź różniły się używanym w nich językiem. Najbardziej, jak można było się spodziewać, ucierpiała warstwa strukturalna i środki stylistyczne tekstu, takie jak powtórzenia i konstrukcje paralelne, najwierniej zaś zostały oddane frazy i słowa kluczowe dla danych piosenek i całości musicalu.

This study’s goal is to compare two Polish translations of selected songs from the musical in English Jesus Christ Superstar. The study consists of three chapters. The first chapter provides a literature review of the topics related to this study. It involves a discussion of the specifics of translating musicals performed on stage, the history of musical theatre worldwide and in Poland, translating opera as a medium similar to musicals, the challenges posed to the translator by the musical’s text, and the research method used in the third chapter. The second chapter serves as a description of the research methodology. It contains a detailed description of the research conducted for this thesis and a description of the data analyzed, including a brief description of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, its history in Poland, and an explanation of Studio Accantus’ work as the authors of one of the studied translations. The third and final chapter analyzes the translations of selected songs from the musical utilising selected research criteria. The main finding of the study is that the analyzed translations did not differ significantly in terms of the aforementioned criteria; rather, they used different translation techniques or differed in the type of language used. As expected, the structural layer and stylistic devices of the text, such as repetitions and parallel constructions, suffered the most, while phrases and keywords for specific songs and the musical as a whole were most faithfully reproduced.
