The thesis is devoted to the image of the child and childhood in songs from the repertoire of the Italian festival Zecchino d’Oro and in their Polish translations performed by the Mille Voci choir. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the textual layer of selected songs and to demonstrate that the children’s song should not be understood solely as a work of simple form and banal, predictable subject matter, subordinated mainly to school or musical education because of its young audience. In this thesis, it is treated as a more complex phenomenon – a carrier of values, models of social relations, and specific representations of the child and childhood. The first chapter discusses the concept of the children’s song, its sources, functions, and significance in constructing the image of the child. The second chapter is devoted to the history of Zecchino d’Oro, the activity of Piccolo Coro dell’Antoniano, the figure of Mariele Ventre, and the connections between the Italian repertoire and the Mille Voci choir. It also discusses the approach to the child and the model of children’s song promoted by both choirs. The third chapter analyses selected songs, focusing on such categories as family, community, locality, play, school, moral values, global issues, and the experience of otherness. Cultural shifts present in the Polish translations are also taken into account.
