Nomadic pre-modernism: a cultural-historical perspective The present text is a methodological and substantive introduction to the entire volume. Above all, it explains why it can be useful to use modern approaches (especially the theoretical constructs of postcolonial studies) to the analysis of pre-modern phenomena and their textual representations. In this context, the term „metanarrative“ is also discussed, which has made a great career not only in English-speaking academic criticism but also in German-speaking countries and worldwide since it was coined by Hayden White in the 1970s. Furthermore, individual chapters of the vol- ume are introduced and their relation to the overall concept is explained.
