Rola konfliktów terytorialnych i kwestii rozliczeń historycznych we współczesnych stosunkach między Republiką Korei a Japonią

Stosunki Japonii i Korei Południowej, sięgające swoją historią wiele wieków wstecz, charakteryzowały się trudną relacją, niekiedy związaną z najazdami, wojnami czy okupacją. Najistotniejszym, i zarazem niezwykle trudnym okresem, rzutującym na współczesne stanowiska państw względem siebie, była aneksja Korei dokonana przez Japonię na początku XX wieku. Skutki wydarzeń z tamtego okresu, w postaci nierozwiązanego sporu terytorialnego i kwestii rozliczeń historycznych czy konfliktu pamięci, są obecne we współczesnej debacie na temat koreańsko-japońskich relacji. Jednocześnie, stosunki obu państw charakteryzują się ambiwalentnością. Ze względu na powiązania handlowe i sojusz ze Stanami Zjednoczonymi, Japonia i Korea współpracują ze sobą na płaszczyźnie zarówno gospodarczej, jak i politycznej. Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza wpływu spornych kwestii terytorialnych i tych dotyczących pamięci historycznej oraz wynikających z nich napięć między państwami, na współczesne stosunki koreańsko-japońskie. Analiza uwzględni zarówno kwestie blokujące ich rozwój, ale także inicjatywy wspierające pogłębianie pokojowej współpracy Japonii i Korei Południowej.

The relations between Japan and South Korea, which date back many centuries, have been characterised by a difficult relationship, sometimes related to invasions, wars and occupation. The most crucial, and at the same time extremely difficult, period having an impact on the modern positions to one another, was the Japanese annexation of Korea in the beginning of 20th century. The consequences of the events in that period, in the form of an unsettled territorial dispute and the matter of historical settlements or the conflict of memory, are present in the modern debate on the Korea-Japan relations. At the same time, those two states’ relationship is characterised by ambivalence. Due to the trade connections and the alliances with the United States, Japan and Korea are cooperating with each other on both economical and political fields. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the impact of tensions between those states, and the matters that caused them - the territorial dispute and the questions of the historical memory, on the modern Korea-Japan relations. The analysis will take into account both the matters blocking the development of those relations, but also the initiatives that support deepening the pacific cooperation between Japan and South Korea.
