Remediation of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns in Modern Film Adaptations

Niniejsza praca dyplomowa ukazuje procesy remediacyjne występujące we współczesnych adaptacjach filmowych postaci Batmana, opartych na wersji bohatera zaprezentowanej w komiksie Franka Millera The Dark Knight Returns w 1986 roku. Praca przedstawia teorię remediacji Jaya David’a Boltera i Richarda Grusina z 1999 roku oraz historię i rozwój postaci Batmana w medium komiksu by następnie korzystając z rozszerzeń oryginalnej teorii remediacji zaproponowanych przez Drew Mortona oraz Tomasza Żaglewskiego poddać analizie sposób, w który trzy kolejne współczesne adaptacje w reżyserii Christophera Nolana, Zacka Snydera oraz Matta Reeves’a przenoszą postaci i narracje komiksowe do medium filmu. Dodatkowym punktem odniesienia w analizie jest bezpośrednia adaptacja The Dark Knight Returns w formie filmu animowanego w reżyserii Jaya Olive’y.

The following thesis presents the remediation processes occurring in the modern film adaptations of the Batman character, based on the version of the character depicted in Frank Miller's 1986 comic book The Dark Knight Returns. The thesis introduces Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin's 1999 remediation theory as well as the history and development of the Batman character in the comic book medium. Using extensions of the original remediation theory proposed by Drew Morton and Tomasz Żaglewski, the thesis analyzes how three subsequent contemporary adaptations directed by Christopher Nolan, Zack Snyder, and Matt Reeves transfer comic book characters and narratives to the film medium. An additional reference point in the analysis is the adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns as an animated film directed by Jay Olive.
