Założeniem poniższej pracy jest przedstawienie genezy i funkcji instrumentu jakim jest sistrum w muzyce i sztuce starożytnego Rzymu. W celu odpowiedzi na pytanie, jak zmienił się wygląd grzechotki na przestrzeni wieków i w zależności od kultur, autorka zgromadziła wszystkie znane jej informacje dotyczące tegoż przedmiotu oraz jego roli w kulcie Izydy w jednym miejscu i poddała je analizie. Praca “Sistrum w muzyce, kulcie i kulturze starożytnego Rzymu” ma charakter przeglądowy. Wykorzystuje ona metody analizy oraz krytycznej oceny prac i artykułów, jakie już wcześniej powstały na dany temat. Sistrum było instrumentem istotnym dla wyznawców kultu Izydy nie tylko w samym starożytnym Rzymie. Świadczą o tym bogata ikonografia oraz liczne zabytki, które są przedstawione i opisane w poniższej pracy. Zbadany został również wpływ licznych kultur na funkcję i wygląd grzechotki, który nie uległ znacznym zmianom od momentu pojawienia się jej po raz pierwszy w Starym Państwie, aż do czasów Cesarstwa Rzymskiego. Praca ta gromadzi wszystkie dostępne autorce informacje dotyczące sistrum oraz jego roli w kulcie Izydy w jednym miejscu i tworzy swego rodzaju krótką monografię, która do tej pory nie pojawiła się w świecie naukowym.

This paper aims to present the origins and the functions of the instrument knows as ’sistrum’ in the music and art of ancient Rome. In order to answer the question how the appearance of the rattle has changed over the centuries and depending on cultures, the author collected and analyzed all the information known to her regarding this object and its role in the cult of Isis. The thesis Sistrum in music, cult and culture of ancient Rome aims to present this in the form of a review. It uses methods of analysis and critical evaluation of works and articles previously written on the given topic. Sistrum was an important instrument for the followers of the cult of Isis, and its use was not limited to ancient Rome. This is evidenced by the rich iconography and numerous monuments presented and described in the work below. The influence of different cultures on the function and appearance of the rattle was also examined, which did not change significantly from the moment it first appeared in the Old Kingdom until the times of the Roman Empire. This work collects all the information available to the author regarding the sistrum and its role in the cult of Isis in one place and creates a short monograph that has not appeared in this area of research until now.
