Using YouTube videos as the springboard for speaking practice in English lessons for 7th and 8th graders

Użycie technologii w nauczaniu języka obcego niesie ze sobą wiele pozytywnych implikacji. Korzystanie z narzędzi online może być szczególnie pomocne w przypadku rozwijania sprawności słuchania i mówienia, które umożliwiają swobodną komunikację. Głównym celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie wykorzystania filmów platformy YouTube jako punktu wyjścia do rozwijania sprawności mówienia podczas zajęć języka angielskiego dla uczniów klas siódmych i ósmych. Praca składa się z dwóch rozdziałów. Pierwszy z nich opisuje szeroko rozumiany rozwój poznawczy oraz złożone potrzeby i zainteresowania siedmio- i ośmioklasistów. Przedstawiona charakterystyka potwierdza potrzebę zastosowania technologii podczas zajęć języka angielskiego, gdyż lekcje z jej wykorzystaniem są bardziej interaktywne i angażujące uczniów. Rozdział teoretyczny przedstawia także różne aktywności ćwiczące sprawność mówienia, w tym poprawną wymowę oraz sposoby na jej ewaluację. W drugim rozdziale zaprezentowano scenariusze lekcji oraz opracowane przez nauczyciela materiały dydaktyczne, sukcesywnie wykorzystywane podczas prowadzonych zajęć. Każdy plan lekcji przedstawia opis jej przebiegu oraz refleksje po jej zakończeniu. Plany lekcji wykorzystują również narzędzia online opisane w części teoretycznej. W załącznikach na końcu pracy zostały zawarte linki do ćwiczeń i zdjęć materiałów dydaktycznych wykorzystanych podczas każdej lekcji.

The use of technology in teaching a foreign language is wide and it brings numerous positive effects. Using online tools can be highly beneficial, for instance, in developing listening and speaking competencies, which are an integral part of a language that, on the other hand, enables one to communicate freely with others. In this manner, the main focus of this thesis is to present the use of YouTube videos as a springboard for speaking practice in English lessons for 7th and 8th graders. In addition, different online tools useful when teaching English language components are described, in particular speaking skills. The paper is divided into two chapters. The first one describes the target groups along with their broadly understood cognitive development and complex needs and interests. The provided characteristic confirms the need to use technology during English classes as the lessons including online tools are more interactive and engaging. It also presents various speaking activities and ways of assessing them properly. Moreover, the chapter highlights the significance of teaching accurate pronunciation, which is an integral part of speaking competence. Consequently, it indicates that it is important to sensitise learners to the sounding of consonants as mispronouncing a sound may lead to changing the word and its meaning. The second chapter presents lesson plans and teacher-made didactic materials that were used during the conducted lessons. Each lesson plan introduces the description of the course of the lesson and post-lesson reflections. What is more, they include the use of online tools described in the theoretical chapter. Additionally, links to the activities and pictures of the teaching materials used during each lesson are attached.
