Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest fenomenowi podcastów true crime w Polsce. Jej celem jest nakreślenie obrazu współczesnego rynku podcastów true crime w kraju, uwzględniającego charakterystykę podcasterów, publikowanych przez nich treści, działań, poprzez które je promują, oraz ich odbiorców, a także przedstawienie historii polskich i zagranicznych utworów o prawdziwych przestępstwach oraz opisanie rozwoju podcastingu w kraju i na świecie. The thesis is devoted to the phenomenon of true crime podcasts in Poland. Its purpose is to depict the state of the contemporary true crime podcast market in the country, taking into account the characteristics of podcasters, the content they publish, the activities through which they promote it, and their audiences, as well as to present the history of Polish and foreign true crime publications and describe the development of podcasting in the country and around the world. The thesis presents definitions of true crime publications and their history: from 16th-century folk songs about sensational crimes to contemporary podcasts about offenders’ and victims’ lives. The author explained what podcasts are and how the podcasting phenomenon developed, pointing out key events and tools. Data on podcast listening in the country and worldwide was also presented, providing a profile of Polish listeners. By compiling the country's most popular true crime podcasters, the author analyzed their involvement in creative activities, social media activity, and participation in additional projects. In an in-depth analysis of selected true crime podcasts author examined how they build their messages, pointing out similarities as well as differences that may affect the creators’ popularity. In recent years, more and more true crime podcasts have been appearing online. The number of true crime podcasters is also increasing, and the interest in their work indicates that content about criminals and crimes is being listened to by more and more people, some of whom are listening to it with greater frequency. True crime works have been generating public interest for centuries, and the podcast format – accessible anytime, on almost any device – allows listeners to listen to the stories even while doing their chores. The industry is also growing due to podcasters’ commitment to promoting their work, both on social media and through participation in additional projects and events. The most popular creators aim to professionalize their actions by involving others in the creation of their podcasts, citing numerous sources and, above all, creating content loaded with detailed descriptions of violent events, special effects, and soundtracks that create a sense of horror. Behind the success of podcasters, there are listeners, hundreds of thousands of whom subscribe to the channels of their favorite creators on the YouTube platform, and tens of thousands who gather on dedicated Facebook groups.
