Culture-bound items in two Polish translations of “Madame Bovary” by Gustave Flaubert.

Niniejsza praca wychodzi od zagadnień teorii przekładu związanych z tłumaczeniem elementów kulturowych. Jej celem jest zbadanie, jakie techniki tłumaczeniowe zostały zastosowane przez dwoje polskich tłumaczy powieści Pani Bovary Gustave’a Flauberta oraz w jaki sposób dokonane przez nich wybory odzwierciedlają ich podejście do tłumaczenia elementów kulturowych. Analiza uwzględnia również wpływ odstępu czasowego między wydaniami obu przekładów oraz fakt, że Pani Bovary jest powieścią osadzoną w realiach XIX-wiecznej Francji, a więc oddaloną od polskiego odbiorcy nie tylko geograficznie, ale również czasowo i kulturowo. Rozdział pierwszy przedstawia zagadnienia tłumaczenia literackiego i relacji między przekładem a kulturą oraz wyjaśnia pojęcie elementów kulturowych. Omówione zostały również dwie klasyfikacje technik tłumaczeniowych według Petera Newmarka i Krzysztofa Hejwowskiego. W rozdziale drugim zaprezentowano analizę ilościową oraz jakościową wybranych przykładów, pogrupowanych na podstawie wspomnianych klasyfikacji. Składająca się z dwóch części analiza pozwoliła na sformułowanie wniosków dotyczących zastosowanych technik oraz ukazanie różnic między podejściami tłumaczy, w tym ich wrażliwości na kulturowe uwarunkowania powieści.

This thesis concerns the translation of culture-bound items and aims to examine the techniques employed by two Polish translators of Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. It investigates how the translators’ choices reflect their approaches to translating cultural elements, acknowledging the significance of the temporal distance between the two versions. The analysis also considers the fact that Madame Bovary is set in the 19th-century France and is therefore distant from Polish readers not only geographically, but also temporally and culturally. The first chapter outlines the specific features of literary translation and the relationship between translation and culture. It also explains the concept of culture-bound items and presents two classifications of translation techniques proposed by Peter Newmark and Krzysztof Hejwowski. The second chapter consists of both quantitative and qualitative analyses of selected examples, categorized according to the aforementioned classifications. The findings allow to formulate conclusions on the techniques employed by the two translators and highlight the differences between their approaches, including their sensitivity to the cultural context of the novel.
