The foreign language effect on moral decision judgments: Comparison between L2 and L3

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest porównanie wpływu języka drugiego oraz języka trzeciego na osądy moralne. Zbadano również wpływ stosunku czasu używania poszczególnych języków w ciągu dnia oraz deklarowanego poziomu biegłości na osądy moralne. Pierwszą część pracy stanowi teoretyczny wstęp, w którym omówiony został efekt języka obcego oraz jego możliwe wyjaśnienia. Drugą część stanowi opis przeprowadzonego badania, w którym uczestnicy zostali poproszeni o ocenienie moralności opisanych działań przedstawionych w drugim i trzecim języku. Wyniki badania przeprowadzonego na studentach i licealistach nie wykazały znaczącej różnicy w uśrednionej ocenie dylematów w języku drugim a trzecim. Zauważono korelację pomiędzy ocenami poszczególnych dylematów moralnych niezależnie od tego, w jakich językach zostały one przedstawione. Nie zauważono wpływu czasu, przez jaki używane są poszczególne języki w ciągu dnia, a osądami moralnymi.

The purpose of the presented study is to compare the influence of second and third languages on moral judgments. Additionally, the study investigated the effect of the ratio of the usage time of each language per day and the declared level of proficiency on moral judgments. The first part of the thesis consists of a theoretical overview, in which the Foreign Language Effect and its possible explanations are discussed. The second part is a description of the conducted study, in which participants evaluated the morality of the described activities presented in second and third languages. The study was conducted on university and high school students. The study results showed no significant difference in the averaged evaluation of the dilemmas in second and third languages. A correlation was noted between the ratings of the individual moral dilemmas, regardless of which languages they were presented in. There was no noticeable effect of the percent of time each language was used per day on moral judgments.
