Serving LGBTQ+ Library Users: Perspectives from Poland

Prezentacja z wystąpienia w czasie seminarium ELAN International Peer Learning Cycle 2025: Diversity & Inclusion Edition zorganizowanego w dniach 12-13 listopada 2025 r. w Hadze przez European Library Association Network (ELAN). Tematem prezentacji jest sytuacja polskich użytkowników bibliotek ze społeczności LGBTQ+ oraz poglądy bibliotekarzy dotyczące obsługi tej grupy użytkowników. Biblioteki w Polsce mierzą się z brakiem systemowych rozwiązań dla osób LGBTQ+. Choć rośnie społeczna akceptacja i inicjatywy oddolne, problemem pozostają skutki „stref wolnych od LGBT”, brak kompetencji oraz lęk przed ostracyzmem.

Presentation from a speech given during the ELAN International Peer Learning Cycle 2025: Diversity & Inclusion Edition seminar organized on November 12-13, 2025, in The Hague by the European Library Association Network (ELAN). The presentation focuses on the situation of Polish library users from the LGBTQ+ community and librarians’ perspectives on serving this user group. Libraries in Poland are facing a lack of systemic solutions for LGBTQ+ people. Although social acceptance and grassroots initiatives are growing, the effects of “LGBT-free zones,” lack of competence, and fear of ostracism remain a problem.
