Translation of Wordplay and Cultural References in the German Subtitled Version of the Series “Bojack Horseman”

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza gier słownych i odniesień kulturowych pojawiających się w amerykańskim serialu BoJack Horseman oraz ich tłumaczenia z języka angielskiego na język niemiecki w napisach. Na początku przedstawiony zostaje zarys teoretyczny, który obejmuje zasadnicze informacje na temat humoru i przekładu audiowizualnego. Zdefiniowane zostają pojęcia takie jak gra słowna i odniesienie kulturowe. Podane są również obecne w literaturze typologie i techniki tłumaczeniowe wyżej wymienionych elementów. Kolejno w części praktycznej przedstawione i omówione zostają wybrane fragmenty serialu oraz ich tłumaczenie na język niemiecki ze szczególnym zwróceniem uwagi na zastosowane strategie. Tłumaczenie zostaje zbadane pod kątem zgodności z oryginałem oraz zachowania efektu humorystycznego. W ocenie przekładu pod uwagę zostają wzięte również ograniczenia, które nakładają zasady tworzenia napisów do serialu. Poruszony zostaje także temat specyfiki tłumaczenia z języka angielskiego na język niemiecki.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the wordplays and cultural references occurring in the American TV series BoJack Horseman and their translation from English into German in the subtitled version. Firstly, the theoretical background is presented. It embraces essential information on humour and audiovisual translation. Terms such as wordplay and cultural reference are defined. The typologies and translation techniques of the aforementioned elements present in the literature are also described in this thesis. Subsequently, in the practical part, selected fragments of the series and their translation into German are presented and discussed with particular attention to the strategies used. The translation is examined in terms of its correspondence with the original and the preservation of the humour effect. The constraints imposed by subtitling rules are also taken into account in the evaluation of the translation. In addition, the study addresses the specificities of translation from English into German.
