Audio describing nudity: A case study of the British TV show “Naked Attraction” on Channel 4

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza audiodeskrypcji związanej z nagością w brytyjskim programie telewizyjnym „Naked Attraction”. Część teoretyczna składa się z czterech rozdziałów. Dwa pierwsze rozdziały poświęcone są znaczeniu audiodeskrypcji, standardom jej tworzenia oraz grupie docelowej. Trzeci rozdział zawiera informacje o strategiach i wyzwaniach związanych z tworzeniem serwisu. W ostatnim rozdziale teoretycznym autorka opisuje zagadnienie tematów tabu w audiodeskrypcji. Piąty rozdział pracy stanowi jej część badawczą dotyczącą audiodeskrypcji „Naked Attraction”. Analizie zostały poddane terminy używane do opisywania nagich części ciała, sposoby nazywania uczestników programu, reakcje na ukazywanie nagości, odniesienia audiodeskryptorów do wypowiedzi uczestników oraz łączenie różnych stylów i rejestrów. Ponadto zbadane zostały aspekty słuchowe audiodeskrypcji, jej związek z językiem programu oraz odbiór przez widzów na podstawie recenzji dostępnych w internecie. Wyniki pracy ukazują szereg wniosków, takich jak istotne różnice w opisywaniu męskiego i żeńskiego ciała, tabuizacja i eufemizacja jako dominujące metody opisywania narządów intymnych czy kreatywne podejście do audiodeskrypcji wykraczające poza jej oficjalne standardy.

This thesis aims to analyze audio descriptions related to nudity in the British program Naked Attraction. The theoretical part of the thesis consists of four chapters. The first two chapters deal with the notion of audio description, standards for its creation, and the target audience. The third chapter provides information on strategies and challenges regarding this service. In the final theoretical chapter, the author explores the issue of taboo references in audio description. The fifth chapter is devoted to a research study concerning audio description in Naked Attraction. It analyzes the terms used to describe naked body parts, the contestants’ naming, the reactions to nudity, the audio describers’ references to the spoken, and the interplay of styles and registers in the show. Furthermore, the study examines the audio description relevance to the language of the program, the auditory aspects of the audio description, and the viewers’ reception thereof through an analysis of online reviews. The results of the study reveal a number of findings, such as significant differences in describing male and female bodies, the prevalence of taboo and euphemization among the genital terms, and a creative approach to the audio description, which shifts away from its official standards.
