Synchronization in dubbing: An analysis of isochrony in the Polish and Spanish translations of the movie Tall girl

Niniejsza praca stanowi analizę izochronii w polskim i hiszpańskim dubbingu filmu anglojęzycznego pt. Wysoka Dziewczyna w celu sprawdzenia, jakie czynniki wpływają na zachowanie tego rodzaju synchronizacji. Aspektami branymi pod uwagę w badaniu są liczba sylab w wersie dialogowym oraz obecność postaci na ekranie. W części teoretycznej przedstawiono podejście do dubbingu w Polsce i Hiszpanii, rodzaje synchronizacji, standardy jakości, które musi spełniać dubbing oraz zarys procesu nagrywania dubbingu. Część praktyczną stanowi ilościowe badanie porównawcze, gdzie zestawiono ze sobą czas trwania i liczbę sylab wybranych wersów dialogowych w języku źródłowym oraz ich odpowiedników w języku polskim i hiszpańskim. Wyniki analizy wskazują wyraźną tendencję do zachowywania izochronii w obu językach docelowych. Dane otrzymane w tej części nie sugerują, aby liczba sylab w wersie wpływała na izochronię. Ponadto, analiza pokazuje, że izochronia jest przestrzegana z taką samą starannością zarówno w przypadku wersów, w których postać jest widoczna na ekranie, jak i w przypadkach, gdzie nie jest widoczna dla widza. W ostatnim rozdziale opisano wywiad przeprowadzony z profesjonalistą pracującym w branży dubbingowej w celu uzupełnienia informacji zawartych w pracy o niuanse związane z branżą. Z rozmowy wynika, że w procesie nagrywania dubbingu mogą pojawić się dodatkowe czynniki wpływające na jakość finalnego produktu, a zatem również na izochronię, takie jak wewnętrzna kontrola jakości danego studia lub budżet przeznaczony na nagrania.

This thesis constitutes an analysis of isochrony in Polish and Spanish dubbed translations of the English-speaking movie Tall Girl, in order to investigate what factors have an influence on maintaining this type of synchronization. The aspects considered in the study are the syllable count of a given dialogue line and the presence of the character on the screen. The theoretical part of the thesis covers the approach to this mode of Audiovisual Translation in Poland and in Spain, the types of synchronization, the quality standards that a dubbed translation should meet, and the outline of the dubbing process. The practical part presents a quantitative comparative study that compares the duration and the syllable count of the selected source language dialogue lines with its Polish and Spanish equivalents. The results of the analysis point to a strong tendency to maintain isochrony in both target languages. The data obtained does not suggest that the number of syllables in a dialogue line impacts isochrony. What is more, the analysis shows that isochrony is observed with the same amount of precision in the case of on-screen lines, as well as in the case of the off-screen lines. The last chapter describes an interview with a dubbing professional in order to complement the information included in this thesis with industry-specific details. The discussion reveals that various additional factors in the dubbing process can influence the quality of the final product (and therefore also isochrony), such as the internal quality checks of a given studio or the budget dedicated for the recording.
