This thesis examines the role of flowers in the Japanese Way of Tea (chanoyu) through the study of floral arrangements known as chabana. It presents the fundamental aesthetic principles of chanoyu, including the concept of wabi-sabi, as well as the origins of chabana, which developed from the art of ikebana. The differences between chabana and ikebana are discussed, highlighting the importance of naturalness and simplicity in the aesthetics of the Way of Tea. The thesis characterizes the principles governing the display of flowers during chakai and chaji gatherings, the place of chabana within the tea room, and the vessels used for flower arrangements. It also analyzes the functions and significance of chabana, including the issue of prohibited flowers. Furthermore, the thesis explores values such as seasonality, naturalness, and simplicity.
