Lutheran Revival and National Education in Denmark: The Religious Background of N. F. S. Grundtvig's Educational Ideas

N. F. S. Grundtvig's idea of national education has usually been regarded a part of the history of adult education or as a complex of national ideas. This article takes into consideration that Grundvig was first and foremost a clergyman, a founder of grundtvigianism and of the Grundtvigian revival movement. It presents a new perspective on the Lutheran background of Grundvig's educational programme, and its impact on the shaping of a civic society in Denmark. A religious revival which Grundtvig underwent during the first decades of the nienteenth century shaped the background of his educational programmes.
