Translation Analysis of Sailing Terminology Based on the Book Adrift by Tami Oldham Ashcraft

Niniejsze badanie stanowi analizę translatoryczną terminologii żeglarskiej zawartej w powieści „41 Dni Nadziei” autorstwa Tami Oldham Ashcraft oraz jej polskiego przekładu dokonanego przez Piotra Budkiewicza. W książce tej występuje znacząca liczba specjalistycznych terminów związanych z żeglarstwem. Celem tej pracy jest ocena skuteczności zastosowania technik tłumaczeniowych według modelu Moliny i Albira w przekładzie terminologii żeglarskiej zawartej w powieści, z uwzględnieniem jej technicznej specyfiki oraz zachowania cech stylu oryginalnego tekstu. Część teoretyczna pracy skupia się na zagadnieniach z zakresu teorii translatoryki, tłumaczeń literackich i specjalistycznych, problemie definicji strategii, metod, technik i procedur tłumaczeniowych oraz terminologii, w szczególności terminologii żeglarskiej. Część empiryczna pracy obejmuje analizę translatoryczną wybranych fragmentów powieści. W ostatniej części pracy zostały przedstawione wyciągnięte wnioski dotyczące efektywności i dokładności tłumaczenia.

The study presents a comprehensive translation analysis of sailing terminology in context of the novel ‘Adrift’ by Tami Oldham Ashcraft and its Polish translation by Piotr Budkiewicz. The book contains an enormous number of specialized maritime terms. The objective of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of the use of Molina and Albir’s translation techniques in order to translate the seafaring terminology in the novel, while preserving its technical specificity and the stylistic features of the source text. The theoretical part of the work discusses in detail the issue of translation studies, literary and specialized translations, translation strategies, methods, techniques and procedures, and terminology with the special focus on the sailing terminology. The second part of the thesis is the empirical part, which provides a translation analysis of the extracted passages from the book. In the last part of the work, the conclusions are presented, with a particular focus on the effectiveness and quality of the translation.
