Comparative analysis of the translations of the hymn “Gloria in excelsis Deo” into the Polish, English and Russian languages

Celem niniejszej pracy jest przeprowadzenie analizy porównawczej wybranych przekładów hymnu liturgicznego Gloria in excelsis Deo na język polski, angielski i rosyjski. Badaniu poddano po dwa tłumaczenia na każdy z języków docelowych, zestawione z łacińskim oryginałem. W części poświęconej językowi rosyjskiemu przeanalizowano jeden przekład z łaciny oraz jeden z greki, wywodzący się z tradycji wschodniego chrześcijaństwa. Głównym zadaniem pracy było określenie jakości tłumaczeń, ustalenie, na ile przekłady oparte wyłącznie na tekście łacińskim odpowiadają oryginałowi, a także ocena, czy odzwierciedlają one cechy dyskursu religijnego charakterystyczne dla danego języka i kontekstu kulturowego. Wyniki analizy ujawniły istotne różnice w stopniu wierności wobec tekstu źródłowego oraz znaczące rozbieżności językowe, wynikające z odmiennych celów, jakie przyświecały powstaniu poszczególnych tłumaczeń. Badanie potwierdza, że analizowane przekłady nie tylko odpowiadały na istniejące potrzeby, lecz także czerpały inspirację z innych tradycji językowych, pomimo wyraźnej izolacji chrześcijańskiego Wschodu i Zachodu.

The aim of this thesis is to conduct a comparative analysis of certain translations of the liturgical hymn Gloria in excelsis Deo into the Polish, English and Russian languages as a translation series. The study compares two translations in each target language with the Latin original. In the field of the Russian language, the analysis includes one translation from Latin and one from Greek, coming from the Eastern Christian tradition. The primary goal of this work was to determine the quality of the translations, examine to what extent the translations based only on the Latin language and evaluate whether they reflect the characteristics of the religious discourse typical for each linguistic and cultural context. The results reveal significant differences in terms of fidelity to the primary source text and show strong linguistic discrepancies depending on the reason for releasing the discussed translations. The study confirms that the examined translations not only fulfilled the demand for them, but also took inspiration from other linguistic traditions despite the apparent isolation of Christian East and West.
