Body, Illness, and Identity: Representations of AIDS in Hervé Guibert’s To the Friend Who Did Not Save My Life and Rebecca Makkai’s The Great Believers

Niniejsza praca analizuje i porównuje sposoby przedstawiania HIV/AIDS w dwóch utworach literackich osadzonych w różnych kontekstach kulturowych: The Great Believers Rebeki Makkai oraz To the Friend Who Did Not Save My Life Hervé Guiberta.

This thesis analyzes and compares the representation of HIV/AIDS in two literary works set in different cultural contexts: Rebecca Makkai’s The Great Believers and Hervé Guibert’s To the Friend Who Did Not Save My Life. Using Paula A. Treichler’s concept of the “epidemic of signification,” the thesis examines AIDS as more than merely a medical phenomenon and focuses on the meanings and representations that developed around the disease in American and French cultures. To examine the cultural representations of AIDS in both contexts, three main aspects of the representation of the disease in each book are analyzed: the social and cultural discourses surrounding AIDS, the representation of the body, and the influence of the disease on identity. The comparison seeks to demonstrate how the different cultural contexts of the two works influence the literary representation of AIDS, while also showing that in both works the disease extends beyond its medical dimension and affects the characters’ perception of the body, their identity, and their position in society.
