The aim of this study was to examine the level of awareness of the risks of external interference and manipulation in the information sphere amongst students at the University of Warsaw who actively use the social media platforms TikTok and X (formerly Twitter). For the purposes of this study, the following research hypothesis was formulated: ‘Students at the University of Warsaw exhibit a moderate level of awareness of the risks of foreign interference and manipulation in the information sphere – they recognise the phenomenon in general terms, but their knowledge of specific influence operations and their ability to recognise manipulated content is limited’, whilst the main question addressed in this study was: What is the level of awareness of the risks of foreign interference and manipulation in the information space amongst students at the University of Warsaw who use the TikTok and X platforms? The study discusses the concept of the information space and how it differs from cyberspace. The phenomenon of foreign interference and manipulation in the information space (FIMI) is defined; social media is characterised as an environment conducive to such activities; and the mechanisms and tools used in FIMI operations, as well as the specific features of the TikTok and X platforms, are discussed. The theoretical basis of the paper is drawn from the relevant literature, institutional reports and online sources. In the empirical section, a diagnostic survey method was employed – the questionnaire was completed by 102 students at the University of Warsaw. The research findings indicate that students at the University of Warsaw demonstrate a high level of awareness of the risks associated with FIMI; however, their knowledge of specific influence operations remains limited. This confirms the need for targeted educational initiatives in this area.
