Indirect translation on the example of Kazuki Sakuraba’s novel “Red Girls: The Legend of the Akakuchibas” – the Japanese original, the Polish translation and the mediating English version

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza wpływu tłumaczenia pośredniego na polskie wydanie powieści „Czerwone dziewczyny. Legenda rodu Akakuchibów” autorstwa Kazuki Sakuraby. Jest to japońska powieść, która została przetłumaczona na język angielski, a następnie to tłumaczenie posłużyło za tekst wyjściowy dla wersji polskiej. Część teoretyczna zawiera ogólny zarys obecnego stanu badań nad przekładem pośrednim i jego wpływem na końcowy produkt, klasyfikację i opis wybranych technik tłumaczeniowych oraz błędów związanych z tłumaczeniem elementów kulturowych. Przedstawia także analizowaną powieść oraz jej wydania – angielskie tłumaczenie pośredniczące oraz tłumaczenie polskie. Część analityczna podzielona jest na trzy główne obszary badań: język użyty w powieści i jej perytekstach, informacje geopolityczne oraz kulturę. Przykłady i wyjątki pochodzą z trzech wydań powieści i konfrontowane są różnice wynikające z tłumaczenia poprzez język angielski. Celem analizy jest wskazanie zarówno przypadków odległych od oryginału, jak i przypadków, kiedy to polskie tłumaczenie jest bliższe japońskiemu oryginałowi.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the impact of indirect translation on the Polish edition of the novel “Red Girls. Legend of the Akakuchiba Family” by Kazuki Sakuraba. It is a Japanese novel that was translated into English, and then this translation served as the starting text for the Polish translation. The theoretical part includes an overview of current research on intermediate translation and on its impact on the final product, a classification and description of selected translation techniques and errors connected to the translation of cultural elements, as well as an introduction to the analysed novel and its editions – the English and the Polish translation. The analytical part is divided into three main areas of research: language of the novel and its peritexts, geopolitical information, and culture. Examples are taken from all three editions of the novel and analysed in terms of the differences resulting from the mediation of English translation. The aim of the analysis is to present the examples of differences from the original and the cases where the Polish translation is closer to the Japanese original.
