The thesis is devoted to presenting and analysing the identity of concrete as a material in Rachel Whiteread's sculpture House, in the context of the architecture of post-war London brutalism and the culture of commemoration. The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate that the material used to make the cast does not merely serve as a carrier of the artistic concept, but itself becomes an active semantic element of the work. The starting point of the thesis is the placement of the sculpture's material - concrete - within a field of research consisting in juxtaposing the brutalist identity of concrete as the language of post-war architecture of London housing estates with its role in the culture of memory. The thesis consists of four chapters, which are intended to guide the reader from a general reflection on concrete as a cultural phenomenon, through a detailed analysis of the process of creating House, to two interpretative layers, namely the dialogue with brutalism and its presence in the culture of memory. Accordingly, the research methods applied in the thesis are a synthesis of formal, iconographic and iconological analysis, together with comparative analysis and literature studies, with particular emphasis on a methodology based on the analysis of materiality in contemporary art, contextualisation within theories of memory culture, and a critical reading of the subject literature.
