“O Fado” de José Malhoa: canção do povo e decadência da cidade

Niniejsza praca dokonuje pogłębionej analizy obrazu autorstwa José Malhoi „O fado” (1910). Analiza obrazu wraz z wszystkimi jego elementami przeprowadzona jest w oparciu o metodę close reading, zaadaptowaną do badania wizualnego. Praca uwzględnia konteksty powstania obrazu, a mianowicie: historyczny, społeczno-kulturowy, jak i biograficzny. Celem pracy jest ukazanie różnych możliwości interpretacji jednego obrazu oraz pokazania jego wpływu na ikonosferę. Obraz autorstwa Malhoi stał się obiektem licznych reinterpretacji, co podkreśla jego uniwersalizm oraz status w świadomości Portugalczyków. Niniejsza praca zwraca również uwagę na fakt, iż „O fado” może być rozpatrywane zarówno jako przedstawienie historii dwojga kochanków z motywem fado w tle, obrazem tak charakterystycznego dla Portugalii gatunku muzycznego, jakim jest fado, jak i próbą odtworzenia na płótnie sytuacji społecznej biednych dzielnic Lizbony początków XX wieku wraz z kulturą ich mieszkańców. Praca skomponowana jest z dwóch rozdziałów, pierwszy opisuje konteksty powstania obrazu, drugi natomiast poświęcony jest analizie dzieła Malhoi oraz wybranych przykładów jego reinterpretacji.

The following thesis performs an in-depth analysis of the painting by José Malhoa O fado (1910). The analysis of the painting with all its elements is conducted on the basis of the close reading method, adapted to visual research. The work takes into account the contexts of the painting's creation, namely: historical, socio-cultural, as well as biographical. The aim of the thesis is to present different possibilities of interpretation of one painting and to show its influence on the iconosphere. The painting by Malhoi has become the object of numerous reinterpretations, which underlines its universality and status in the Portuguese consciousness. This thesis also draws attention to the fact that O fado can be considered both as a representation of the story of two lovers with the fado theme in the background, an image of the fado musical genre, so characteristic of Portugal, and as an attempt to recreate on canvas the social situation of the poor districts of early 20th century Lisbon, together with the culture of their inhabitants. The thesis is composed of two chapters, the first describing the context of the painting's creation, while the second is devoted to an analysis of Malhoi's work and selected examples of its reinterpretation.

A presente tese tese procura uma análise pormenorizada da pintura O fado (1910) de José Malhoi, baseada no método de close-reading adaptado à análise da imagem. A tese contempla os contextos de criação da pintura, nomeadamente: histórico, sócio-cultural e biográfico. A pintura de Malhoi tem sido objeto de numerosas reinterpretações, o que sublinha a universalidade e o estatuto na consciência portuguesa dela. Este trabalho chama ainda a atenção para o facto de O fado poder ser considerado tanto como uma representação da história de dois amantes com o motivo do fado como em fundo, uma imagem do género musical do fado tão caraterístico de Portugal, como uma tentativa de recriar na tela a situação social dos bairros pobres de Lisboa do início do século XX, juntamente com a cultura dos seus habitantes. A obra é composta por dois capítulos, o primeiro descrevendo o contexto de criação de O fado, enquanto o segundo é dedicado à análise da pintura de Malhoa e aos exemplos seleccionados da reinterpretação do quadro.
