The thesis analyses Donna Tartt's The Secret History, focusing on the importance of classical Hellenistic intertext in formulating the novel's distinct aesthetic. Through an exploration of the Beauty-Terror dichotomy in connection with elements of the ancient Greek cult of Dionysus, the thesis aims to discern an aesthetic cantered around the veneration of tragedy and an affinity for morbidity. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis of the symbolism and ritualistic practices associated with the Dionysiac rites illustrates the duality of the deity and its importance for the overarching narrative and aesthetic structure of the novel. The scope of this study includes an analysis of the effects of the application of said aesthetics and the participation in re-enactments of the Dionysiac rites on the characters' morality and sphere of eroticism. Through a comparative analysis of the personal philosophies of the characters and their influence on their lives, the study aims to formulate the novel's overarching aesthetic framework.The first chapter analyses the dichotomy of beauty and terror in relation to Hellenistic aesthetics through the theories of Aristotle and Edmund Burke. The second chapter focuses on Dionysian symbolism in the novel, offering a detailed analysis of literary references, symbolism, and ritual practices associated with Dionysian rites. This chapter illustrates the duality of the deity, reflecting the dichotomy of beauty and terror, and highlights its importance to the overall narrative and aesthetic structure of the novel. The third chapter situates the novel within the gods in exile genre, which depicts the return of ancient deities in modern times, resulting in violent ideological clashes. Through this lens, the chapter reveals the profound impact of the Beauty-Terror dichotomy and Dionysian symbolism, discussed in the first two chapters, on the lives and morality of the characters.
