There are no sociolinguistic studies based on comprehensive analysis conducted among physicians that would present the structure of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons’ sociolect, to describe its pragmatics, ethical and legal aspects as well as the nomination process in the sociolect terminology. The first attempt to analyse physicians’ sociolect was the article written by Adam T. Fox „Medical Slang in British Hospitals”. This article contains a list of sociolect lexemes used by English-speaking physicians (over 190 lexemes) (A. T. Fox 2003: 173-189). The dictionary „Slang medyczny i akronimy: słownik angielsko-polski” was published in 2007. It was written not by physicians, but by linguists – Linda Perlińska and Janusz Krzysztof. The dictionary does not contain any linguistic comments sensu stricto (L. Perlińska 2007). The research included the following tasks: 1) to complete a list of sociolect words used by cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, 2) to describe the structure of the cardiologists and cardiac surgeons’ sociolect (to define the core and the periphery), 3) to characterise pragmatic, ethical and legal aspects of the Polish, Russian and English physicians’ sociolect, 4) to provide the semantic and derivational analysis of the sociolect vocabulary as well as frequency analysis.
