Folk intuitions about consciousness in light of Integrated Information Theory

Teoria zintegrowanej informacji (IIT), zaproponowana przez Giulio Tononiego (Tononi 2004), jest teorią neurobiologiczną, która zakłada możliwość pomiaru świadomości w systemie poprzez określenie jego złożoności, a co za tym idzie, jego zdolności do integracji informacji. W literaturze filozoficznej dotyczącej mierzalności świadomości (Browning i Veit 2020), IIT jest podkreślana jako „obiecująca metoda pomiaru świadomości w maszynach”. Alternatywnym podejściem do kwestii świadomości jest eksperymentalne badanie problemu atrybucji, w którym uczestnicy mają za zadanie przypisać pewne charakterystyczne właściwości (takie jak wyobraźnia lub doświadczenia sensoryczne) różnym podmiotom, oceniając jak naturalne (w skali Likerta) są zdania opisujące te podmioty. Metoda ta identyfikuje intuicje potoczne dotyczące fenomenalnej świadomości (Gray, Gray i Wegner 2007, Sytsma i Machery 2009). Ponieważ istniejąca literatura nie odnosi się do tego, czy intuicje potoczne są kompatybilne z Teorią Zintegrowanej Informacji postanowiłem eksperymentalnie zweryfikować tę zgodność. W mojej pracy licencjackiej przedstawiam wyniki pierwszej części badania, w której uczestnicy przypisywali cechy związane ze świadomością różnym opisom podmiotów (modeli sztucznej inteligencji), ujawniając statystycznie istotną dodatnią korelację (alfa 0,05) między opisami a przypisywanymi cechami. Omawiam również drugą część badania, w której jednocześnie porównałem efekt ucieleśnienia z efektem wysokiej zdolności integracji informacji (Φ).W tym drugim badaniu efekt ciała okazał się statystycznie nieistotny w porównaniu z wysoką zdolnością integracji informacji. Ponadto omawiam wnioski, jakie można wyciągnąć z wyników, że ludzkie intuicje są zgodne z teorią zintegrowanej informacji i czy mogą one pomóc filozofom i kognitywistom w rozwiązaniu problemu mierzalności świadomości.

Integrated Information Theory (IIT), proposed by Giulio Tononi (Tononi 2004), is a neurobiological theory that posits the possibility of measuring consciousness in a system by determining its complexity and, consequently, its capacity to integrate information. In the philosophical literature on the measurability of consciousness (Browning and Veit 2020), IIT is highlighted as a promising method for measuring consciousness in machines. An alternative approach to the issue of consciousness is the experimental investigation of the attribution problem, where participants are tasked with attributing certain characteristic properties (such as imagination or sensory experiences) to various subjects by rating how natural (on a Likert scale) the sentences describing these subjects are. This method identifies folk intuitions about phenomenal consciousness (Gray, Gray, and Wegner 2007, Sytsma and Machery 2009). Since the existing literature does not address whether folk intuitions match Integrated Information Theory, I decided to experimentally verify this alignment. In my thesis, I present the results of the first part of the study, where participants attributed consciousness-related traits to different descriptions of agents (models of artificial intelligence), revealing a statistically significant positive correlation (alpha 0.05) between the descriptions and the attributed traits. I also discuss the second part of the study, where I simultaneously compared the effect of embodiment to the effect of high information integration capacity (Φ). In this latter study, the effect of the body was found to be statistically insignificant in comparison to the high information integration capacity. Furthermore, I discuss the conclusions that can be drawn from the results that people’s intuitions are consistent with Integrated Information Theory and whether they can help philosophers and cognitive scientists address the measurability problem of consciousness.
