Fansubbing as a Form of Unprofessional Translation – An Analysis of “Teen Titans” Season Five

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest analizie fanowskich napisów (fansubbingu) do piątego sezonu Młodych Tytanów. W części teoretycznej skupiono się na przybliżeniu teorii i historii tłumaczeń audiowizualnych, jak również napisów jako jednej z głównych form tego rodzaju praktyk tłumaczeniowych. Zwraca się w niej uwagę na specyficzne ograniczenia techniczne i językowe występujące w tego typu przekładach, a także na strategie obierane przez tłumaczy w celu efektywnego i naturalnego przeniesienia tekstu źródłowego na język docelowy. Część praktyczna stanowi analizę jakościową fanowskich napisów wyselekcjonowanych z odcinków piątego sezonu Młodych Tytanów. W tej sekcji zbadano najczęstsze błędy występujące w amatorskim tłumaczeniu Młodych Tytanów, zestawiając je z kreatywnymi i udanymi rozwiązaniami tłumaczeniowymi. Badanie wykazało, że najczęstszym błędem popełnianym przez tłumaczy amatorów było stosowanie dosłownego tłumaczenia lub kalek językowych w nieodpowiednich sytuacjach konwersacyjnych, jak również eliminowanie bądź zniekształcanie kontekstu kulturowego w wyniku błędnego zrozumienia niuansów tekstu źródłowego. W rezultacie analiz zaobserwowano także kreatywne podejście do przekładu tekstu (m.in. przy tłumaczeniu gier słownych czy dowcipów) oraz zidentyfikowano charakterystyczne dla napisów fanowskich cechy, takie jak noty tłumacza, wtrącenia odautorskie, emotikony czy stosowanie swobodnego, nieformalnego języka.

This thesis is devoted to the analysis of subtitles made by fans (fansubs) of Season Five of the animated series Teen Titans. The theoretical part focuses on presenting the theory and history of audiovisual translation (AVT), as well as subtitling as one of the primary modalities of this type of translation. It draws attention to the specific technical and linguistic limitations inherent in this type of translation, alongside the strategies employed by translators to effectively and naturally transfer the source text into the target language. The analytical part of the study is based on a qualitative study of fan-produced subtitles selected from the episodes of Teen Titans Season Five. This section examines the most common errors occurring in amateur translation, juxtaposing them with creative and successful translation strategies. The research revealed that the most frequent error committed by non-professional translators was the use of literal translation or calques in inappropriate conversational contexts, as well as the elimination or distortion of cultural context resulting from a misunderstanding of the source text nuances. Nonetheless, the analysis also illustrated a creative approach to the translation (specifically regarding humorous aspects) and identifies characteristic features of fansubbing, such as translator’s notes, subjective comments, emoticons, and the usage of casual, informal language.
