Translation of the Formal Register in the TV Series “Bridgerton” - an Analysis of the Polish Subtitles

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest problematyce przekładu rejestru formalnego w tekstach audiowizualnych na przykładzie serialu Bridgertonowie oraz jego polskich napisów. Celem pracy jest analiza sposobu, w jaki formalne elementy języka angielskiego, takie jak formy adresatywne, zwroty grzecznościowe, pośredniość wypowiedzi oraz słownictwo związane z hierarchią społeczną i reputacją, zostają oddane w polskim tłumaczeniu napisowym. Rozdział pierwszy przedstawia podstawowe zagadnienia związane z tłumaczeniem audiowizualnym, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem napisów, ich ograniczeń oraz strategii tłumaczeniowych Gottlieba (1992). Rozdział drugi omawia pojęcie rejestru formalnego, jego cechy oraz związek z grzecznością językową, dystansem społecznym, relacjami władzy i formami adresatywnymi. Rozdział trzeci zawiera część analityczną pracy. Przedstawiono w nim materiał badawczy, metodologię oraz analizę wybranych przykładów z pierwszego sezonu serialu Bridgertonowie. Badanie obejmuje trzy główne kategorie: formy adresatywne i hierarchię społeczną, grzeczność i pośredniość oraz leksykalne i stylistyczne markery rejestru formalnego. W pracy zwrócono uwagę na to, w jaki sposób napisy zachowują, skracają, przeformułowują lub pomijają elementy formalnego języka ze względu na kontekst sceny oraz ograniczenia charakterystyczne dla napisów.

This thesis is devoted to the issue of translating formal register in audiovisual texts, based on the example of the series Bridgerton and its Polish subtitles. The aim of the thesis is to analyse how formal elements of the English language, such as forms of address, polite expressions, indirectness and vocabulary connected with social hierarchy and reputation, are rendered in Polish subtitling. The first chapter presents the basic issues related to audiovisual translation, with particular attention to subtitles, their constraints and Gottlieb’s translation strategies (1992). The second chapter discusses the concept of formal register, its features and its relation to linguistic politeness, social distance, power relations and forms of address. The third chapter contains the analytical part of the thesis. It presents the research material, methodology and analysis of selected examples from the first season of Bridgerton. The study covers three main categories: forms of address and social hierarchy, politeness and indirectness, and lexical and stylistic markers of formal register. The thesis examines how subtitles preserve, shorten, reformulate or omit elements of formal language depending on the context of the scene and the constraints characteristic of subtitling.
