The Translation of English Culinary Terms and Texts into Polish in Selected Cookbooks
Pierwszy i drugi rozdział stanowią część teoretyczną pracy. Pierwszy rozdział zawiera informacje na temat kluczowych zagadnień z dziedziny terminologii tj. terminologii, terminów i tekstów specjalistycznych. Ponadto opisuje najczęstsze problemy spotykane w tłumaczeniu tekstów specjalistycznych. Drugi rozdział stanowi wprowadzenie do zagadnień związanych z językiem kulinarnym.

The thesis „The Translation of English Culinary Terms and Texts into Polish in Selected Cookbooks“ deals with the translation of cookbooks into Polish, with a focus on the translation of terms. The research aims of the thesis are to examine the translation of culinary texts from two English cookbooks and to identify Polish equivalents of terms. An additional aim of the thesis is to identify the techniques used by the translator in translating terms and to assess the quality of the translation in terms of factual accuracy, accessibility to the reader and adaptation of cultural references. The combination of analysis and quality assessment aims to provide a complete picture of the challenges and strategies involved in translating English cookbooks for Polish readers.
The first and second chapters constitute the theoretical part of the thesis. The first chapter contains information on key concepts in the field of terminology, i.e. terminology, terms and specialist texts. In addition, it describes the most common problems encountered in the translation of specialized texts. The second chapter is an introduction to the culinary language. It describes the structure of cookbooks and linguistic elements typical of recipes and complementary texts, as well as the characteristics of the language used in culinary discourse. In addition, it also contains content on the influence of the target audience on the language of cookbooks and the main challenges in the process of translating books in this field.
The practical part contains the research aims of the thesis, methodology, information on the two selected books and their authors, and an analysis of text fragments and their Polish translations. The results of the analysis indicate that translators translate the terms found in cookbooks in a precise and understandable manner and are able to adapt them to readers who are not specialists in fields of origin for the term. There are also errors in the translations, but they are only minor and do not interfere with the reception of the text. In addition, the analysis shows that Polish translations tend to contain more terms and structures typical of specialized texts than the original texts. The greatest freedom in translation is evident in the translation of recipe titles, and Polish translators have the biggest difficulty in translating terms in the form of verbs, as Polish culinary discourse does not have as extensive a terminology in this area as its English counterpart.
The thesis was written based on sources from scientific literature in the fields of linguistics, terminology, translation studies and cultural studies. It also contains definitions taken from English dictionaries.
