After 1989, significant changes occurred in the Polish penitentiary system, marking a shift away from the repressive model typical of communist regimes toward a system oriented toward humanization and resocialization. The aim of this thesis was to analyze and evaluate the transformations that took place in the Polish prison system as a result of the political transition following the collapse of the communist state. The study also sought to trace the evolution of the penitentiary system – from a model based on repression, isolation, an ideological subordination to one that is substantially more humane, grounded in the principles of individualization, humanization of punishment, and respect for human rights and the resocialization of inmates. The research part of the thesis was based on document analysis and involved a comparative examination of legal acts from the PRL era and the 1990s, alongside relevant academic literature. The research problems formulated in the study focused primarily on the characteristics of the penitentiary system under communism, the analysis of key legal reforms, and the actual impact of these reforms. The thesis emphasizes that although the prison system in Poland still faces challenges, it has undergone a profound transformation – from a tool of repression to an institution guided by the principles of resocialization and the protection of human dignity and rights.
