Translation Analysis of Cultural and Humorous Elements in the English- and Polish-language Versions of the Film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza tłumaczenia elementów kulturowych i humorystycznych zawartych w anglojęzycznej dubbingowanej wersji filmu Kot w Butach: Ostatnie Życzenie na język polski. Badanie wykazuje, jakich technik tłumaczeniowych użyto w przekładzie żartów oraz wyrażeń związanych z kulturą, a także jakie tendencje towarzyszą lokalizacji tychże elementów. Przedmiotem pracy jest również ewaluacja działań tłumacza pod kątem zachowania wierności oryginałowi oraz wprowadzenia zabiegów koniecznych dla zrozumienia tekstu w języku docelowym. Część teoretyczna pracy zaznajamia czytelnika z pojęciami translatoryki, tłumaczenia audiowizualnego oraz jego typów, wprowadzając jednocześnie klasyfikację elementów kulturowych i humorystycznych. Wyjaśnione zostają również dwie typologie technik tłumaczeniowych na potrzeby dubbingu. W części analitycznej przeprowadzona zostaje wyżej wspomniana analiza składająca się z wykazu scen oraz opisu wniosków autora przy użyciu diagramów kołowych. Podsumowanie pracy potwierdza postawioną hipotezę, stwierdzając, że tłumacz inteligentnie wykorzystał dostępne techniki w celu doskonałej lokalizacji tekstu źródłowego z zachowaniem jego najważniejszych cech kulturowych. Wyniki badania stanowią cenny materiał dla przyszłych badań nad tendencjami w polskim tłumaczeniu tekstów o nacechowaniu kulturowym i humorystycznym.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the translation of cultural and humorous elements present in the English-language dubbed version of the film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish into Polish. The study reveals what translation techniques were used in the translation of jokes and expressions related to culture, as well as what tendencies accompany the localization of these elements. The subject of the work is also the evaluation of the translator's actions maintaining faithfulness to the original, as well as introducing treatments necessary for understanding the text in the target language. The theoretical part of the work familiarizes the reader with the concepts of translation studies, audiovisual translation, and its types, and introduces the classification of cultural and humorous elements. Two typologies of translation techniques for dubbing are also explained. The analysis mentioned above is carried out in the analytical part of the thesis. It consists of a list of scenes and a description of the author's impressions using pie charts. The conclusion of the study confirms the hypothesis, stating that the translator intelligently used the available techniques to perfectly localize the source text while preserving its most important cultural features. The results of the study provide valuable material for future research on trends in Polish translation of cultural and humorous texts.
