The topic of the chapter is Margaret Fuller's sojourn in Italy, particularly in Rome, in 1848-1850 during the Italian uprising against Austrian occupation. Having learned the language, Fuller became a perfect foreign correspondent, sending dispatches to "The New-York" posts concerning at first mainly Italian culture and then the current political situation in the country. Her criticism was directed both at Italy and the United States: she identified with the Roman Republic and did her best to familiarize her American audience with European developments.
