A Musical Theatre Song as a Challenge for Translator. Two Polish Renditions of SIX.

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest analizie strategii tłumaczeniowych zastosowanych w dwóch polskich przekładach piosenek z musicalu SIX – współczesnej produkcji West Endu, która w nowoczesny i wyjątkowy sposób prezentuje i reinterpretuje historię sześciu królowych, które połączył fakt bycia żonami Henryka VIIII. Musical, jako gatunek, łączy w sobie muzykę, dialogi i narrację, co sprawia, że jego tłumaczenie jest wyjątkowo złożonym zadaniem. Szczególne trudności pojawiają się przy tłumaczeniu piosenek, jako że muszą być one nie tylko zrozumiałe i wierne, ale także spełniać szereg wymagań formalnych dotyczących piosenek śpiewalnych. W przypadku SIX wyzwania te wzmacnia obecność intensywnego humoru, aluzji historycznych (i nie tylko) oraz licznych gier słownych. Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie i opisanie strategii tłumaczeniowych wykorzystanych w obydwu polskich tłumaczeniach. Analiza oparta została na kilku ugruntowanych modelach badawczych znanych autorytetów w dziedzinie tłumaczenia piosenek. Są to: Peter Low, autor modelu penta- i heksatlonum Johan Franzon i jego lista sześciu metod tłumaczenia piosenek, a także model strategii makro-, mezzo- i mikropoziomu, którego autorstwem szczycić się mogą Greenall, Franzon, Kvam i Parianou. Praca odnosi się także do piętnastu szczegółowych strategii tłumaczeniowych Any Guerry i stara się się wpisać w nurt badań opisowych, które rezygnują z oceny jakości przekładu na rzecz szczegółowej analizy zastosowanych rozwiązań. Struktura pracy obejmuje części teoretyczną, oraz analityczną. Ta pierwsza zawiera wprowadzenie do terminologii, przegląd historii i specyfiki musicalu, jako gatunku, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kontekstu polskiego, a także przegląd najważniejszych teorii przekładu, ze szczególnym naciskiem na przekład odniesień kulturowych, humoru, oraz piosenek. W części analitycznej znajdują się porównania wyboru fragmentów piosenek z musicalu SIX w polskich tłumaczeniach wykonanych przez Jacka Mikołajczyka na potrzeby Teatru Syrena, oraz Bartka i Dorotę Kozielskich na potrzeby Studia Accantus.

This thesis is devoted to the analysis of translation strategies used in two polish translations of the songs from the West End musical SIX. The contemporary production presents and reinterprets the history of six Queens, whose only thing in common was having been married to the same person. As a genre, the musical combines music, dialogues and narration. It is not surprising that the translation turns out to be a particularly difficult task in such conditions. Challenges arise when translating songs, as not only do they have to be understandable and faithful to the original, but they also need to meet a series of formal requirements for singable songs. In the case of SIX, these challenges are further intensified by the humour, allusions (historical and others) and numerous puns. The aim of this thesis is to present and describe the translation strategies employed in both versions. The analysis is based on a several established research models developed by renowned authorities. These include: Peter Low with his pentathlon and hexathlon approach, Johan Franzon and his list of six song translation methods as well as the macro-, mezzo- and micro strategy model implemented by Greenall, Franzon, Kvam and Parianou. With an additional reference to Ana Guerra’s 15 translation strategies, this study intends to position itself within the descriptive approach. The structure of the thesis is composed of both: a theoretical and analytical parts. The former introduces relevant terminology, an overview of the history and specific characteristic of the musical as a genre, with particular focus on the Polish context, as well as a review of the most relevant translation theories with emphasis on the translation of cultural references, humour and songs. The latter includes a comparative analysis of selected song fragments from SIX in Polish translations by Jacek Mikołajczyk for Teatr Syrena, as Bartek Kozielski and Danuta Kozielska for Studio Accantus.
