Academic interpreting of Polish Sign Language at the University of Warsaw — a case study

Przedstawiona praca magisterska analizuje usługi tłumaczenia akademickiego dla osób niesłyszących i niedosłyszących na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim, koncentrując się na jakościowym studium przypadku tego zjawiska. Omówiono w niej wieloaspektowy charakter środowiska akademickiego, a także międzynarodowe i krajowe regulacje prawne. Ze względu na temat pracy, nacisk położono na aspekt dostępności tłumaczenia akademickiego w języku migowym; podczas omawiania tej kwestii uwzględniono również stopień, w jakim instytucje wypełniają obowiązki w tym zakresie. W dalszej części pracy przedstawiono bardziej szczegółową dyskusję na temat tłumaczeń akademickich. Wyjaśniono definicje oraz niezbędne cechy, które powinni posiadać tłumacze akademiccy, aby świadczyć usługi na najwyższym poziomie. Wyzwania związane z tego typu usługami dostępności omówiono z dwóch różnych punktów widzenia – tłumacza i społeczności osób niesłyszących – opierając dyskusję na wiedzy teoretycznej zebranej na podstawie danych innych badaczy. Po części teoretycznej następuje jakościowe empiryczne studium przypadku oparte na częściowo ustrukturyzowanych wywiadach z czterema różnymi grupami, które miały możliwość wyrażenia swoich obaw i pomysłów dotyczących tłumaczenia akademickiego: tłumacze akademiccy, studenci niesłyszący i niedosłyszący, naukowcy słyszący i niesłyszący, a także przedstawiciel Biura ds. Osób Niepełnosprawnych. Analiza dotyczyła procedur uzyskiwania usług tłumaczenia ustnego, dynamiki współpracy między grupami interesów oraz ograniczeń występujących w obecnym systemie. Dane przekazane przez respondentów wskazują na rozbieżności między formalnymi przepisami a codzienną praktyką, wyzwania związane z dostępnością i specjalizacją tłumaczy oraz znaczenie współpracy dla skutecznego dostępu do komunikacji. Praca kończy się wskazaniem obszarów, które wymagają poprawy, aby usługa była jak najwyższej jakości.

The presented master’s thesis examines the academic interpreting service for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals at the University of Warsaw, focusing on a qualitative case study of the phenomenon. The multifaceted nature of the academic setting, as well as international and domestic legal regulations, are discussed. Due to the topic of the thesis, the focus is put on the signed language academic interpreting aspect of accessibility; the extent to which institutions implement obligations in this area is also considered while discussing the issue. Further into the thesis, one is presented with a more precise discussion regarding academic interpreting. Definitions are explained, along with necessary qualities that academic interpreters should have to provide the service to the highest standard. Challenges of this type of accessibility service are discussed from two different points of view — interpreter’s and the Deaf community’s — basing the discussion on the theoretical knowledge gathered from data from other researchers. The theoretical part is followed by a qualitative empirical case study, based on semi-structured interviews with four different groups being presented with an opportunity to voice their concerns and ideas regarding academic interpreting academic interpreters, Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, hearing and DHH academics, as well as a representative of the Office for People with Disabilities. The analysis explores procedures for obtaining interpreting services, the dynamics of cooperation among the interest groups, and limitations that come into play within the current system. The data provided by the interviewees point to discrepancies between formal regulations and everyday practice, challenges related to interpreter availability and specialization, and the importance of collaboration for effective communication access. The thesis is concluded with areas that need to be improved for the service to be of the highest quality possible.
