In this article, I analyse the speeches delivered by Hungarian politiciansduring the parliamentary debate of 4 March 1948 on the ratification of the Polish–Hungarian Cultural Convention. I situate these statements in the context of the pivotal year 1948, when Polish–Hungarian relations were beingreshaped within the framework of the post-war “people’s democracy” and under the symbolic influence of the centenary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. I focus on themes of shared Polish and Hungarian struggles for freedom in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as invoked by deputies from different political camps. I devote particular attention to the Hungarian Revolution of 1848‑1849, the participation of Poles in the fighting in Hungary, and the literary testimonies of this brotherhood, especially the figure of Józef Bem and the poetry of Sándor Petőfi. I also show that references to the partitions of Poland and to Polish national uprisings recur in the speeches, revealing a deeply embedded image of Polish–Hungarian friendship in cultural and historical memory, which in 1948 functioned both as an element of tradition and as a tool of contemporary political discourse.
