The Lavender Language. Semantic Analysis of Queer Language in the Pilot Episode of the American Series Queer as Folk

Zakres tematyczny pracy obejmuje zagadania tzw. lawendowego języka (ang. Lavender Language) oraz analizę semantyczną tego języka użytego w pilotażowym odcinku amerykańskiego serialu „Queer as Folk”. Zarys historyczny oraz teoretyczny pracy obejmuje takie zagadnienia jak semantyka, historia społeczności LGBTQ+ (społeczności mniejszości seksualnych – z ang. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) w Stanach Zjednoczonych, gender theory oraz analizę dotychczasowego stanu wiedzy na ten temat. Analiza została oparta na wnioskach badaczy języka społeczności LGBTQ+ oraz etymologii i historii społeczności LGBTQ+. Wyrażenia użyte w serialu zostały podzielone na kategorie oraz opisane, co umożliwiło prezentację kluczowych cech języka społeczności LGBTQ+ oraz wgląd w sposób jego tworzenia. Dodatkowo, w pracy użyto także środków badawczych z zakresu semantyki formalnej oraz pragmatyki, przez co uzyskano zarys środków językowych używanych w społeczności LGBTQ+ od lat trzydziestych ubiegłego wieku, ale także w czasie produkcji serialu (tj. lat 2000). Co więcej, przez dokładny zarys postaci oraz tła serialu uzyskano kontekst do odpowiedniego odczytania ich znaczenia, a przez ukazanie zarysu historycznego także do pogłębienia rozumienia sytuacji społecznej osób należącej do tej społeczności. Wnioski z pracy zawierają formalny opis użytych środków językowych oraz cech, które ten język prezentuje.

The scope of the work includes the issues of the so-called Lavender Language and the semantic analysis of this language used in the pilot episode of the American series Queer as Folk. The historical and theoretical outline of the work includes such matters as semantics, the history of the LGBTQ+ community (sexual minority communities - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) in the United States, gender theory and an analysis of the current state of knowledge on the subject. The analysis was based on the findings of researchers of the language of the LGBTQ+ community and the etymology and history of the LGBTQ+ community. The expressions used in the series were categorized and described, which enabled the presentation of key features of the language of the LGBTQ+ community and insight into how it was formed. In addition, the study also used research tools from the fields of formal semantics and pragmatics, thus providing an outline of the linguistic means used in the LGBTQ+ community since the 1930s, but also at the time of the series' production (i.e., the 2000s). Moreover, by providing a detailed outline of the characters and background of the series, a context was obtained for the appropriate reading of their meaning, and by showing the historical outline also for deepening the understanding of the social situation of people belonging to this community. The conclusions of the work include a formal description of the linguistic means used and the features that this language presents.
