Translating Humour in Webcomics. A Case Study of Selected English to German Translations

W multimodalnym medium, jakim jest komiks, humor jest wywoływany równocześnie przez elementy graficzne jak i tekstowe. W wielu przypadkach elementy graficzne stanowią kontekst dla dialogu lub innych elementów tekstowych, pomagając w ten sposób wywołać efekt humorystyczny. Komiksy internetowe, które są stosunkowo nowym medium, posiadają przede wszystkim cyfrową formę oraz często także elementy o całkowicie cyfrowym charakterze. Jako że komiksy internetowe są tworzone przez internautów dla internautów, ich język oraz treść również różnią się od tych w tradycyjnych komiksach. Język używany we fragmentach humorystycznych komiksów internetowych jest często potoczny i pełen wyrażeń idiomatycznych jak i slangu, które mogą być problematyczne podczas tłumaczenia. W analizowanych przykładach angielskich komiksów internetowych oraz ich niemieckich tłumaczeń zauważalna jest duża potoczność języka. Ta potoczność ma wpływ nie tylko na intencjonalność humoru oraz obecność efektu humorystycznego, ale może również stanowić wyzwanie w procesie tłumaczenia na język niemiecki, w którym kontrast pomiędzy językiem potocznym a formalnym jest mniejszy oraz ma zupełnie inną naturę niż ten obecny w języku angielskim.

Comics are multimodal media where humour can be induced both by semiotic and graphic elements. In many cases the graphic elements support humorous effect by creating context for the dialogue and other semiotic elements, such as inscriptions. Webcomics, which are a relatively new medium, present a predominantly digital form of comics and are often ‘enhanced’ with purely digital elements. Since they are created by the Internet users for the Internet audiences, their language and content also differ from traditional comics. Language used in humorous scenes from webcomics is often informal and uses idiomatic expressions and slang, which can prove problematic for their translation. In cases studied in this work of English webcomics and their German translations the overall informality of the language was found to not only have considerable influence over intentionality of humour and inducement of laughter, but also pose a challenge by translation into German, in which the contrast between the formal and informal language is not as significant as in English.
