Depictions of Bereavement in American Poetry

Niniejsza praca podejmuje temat przedstawienia procesu żałoby w poezji amerykańskiej. Pierwszy rozdział koncentruje się na żalu odczuwanym po śmierci romantycznego partnera na przykładzie trzech wierszy Forresta Gandera z jego zbioru zatytułowanego Be With oraz wiersza From One Who Stays Amy Lowell. Analiza tych wierszy pokazuje, że utrata ukochanej osoby wprowadza pustkę w życie osoby pogrążonej w żałobie. Drugi rozdział skupia się na opłakiwaniu śmierci dziecka w wierszach Anne Bradstreet. Wiersze poświęcone jej wnukom ilustrują problem wiary w obliczu śmierci dziecka. Odzwierciedlają one również problemy związane z doktrynami chrztu i zbawienia w kościele purytańskim. Trzeci rozdział skupia się na żałobie po śmierci nieznajomego przedstawionej w wierszach Johna Berrymana, Franka O'Hary i Gwendolyn Brooks. Rozdział ten pokazuje, że opłakując nieznajomych, autorzy zauważają własne problemy i wewnętrzne konflikty. Elegie dla nieznajomych poruszają również kwestie dotyczące całego społeczeństwa, w tym wojny, kapitalizmu i rasizmu.

This thesis analyses the representation of the bereavement process in the American poetry. The first chapter focuses on the grief felt after the death of a romantic partner on the example of three poems by Forrest Gander from his collection titled Be With and a poem “From One Who Stays” by Amy Lowell. The analyses of these poems shows that the loss of beloved person brings emptiness into the bereaved person’s life. The second chapter focuses on mourning the death of an infant in the poems by Anne Bradstreet. Poems for her grandchildren illustrate the struggle with faith in the face of death of a child. They also reflect the problems of Puritans’ beliefs such as doctrine of baptism and salvation. The third chapter focuses on bereavement after the death of a stranger as depicted in poems by John Berryman, Frank O’Hara, and Gwendolyn Brooks. The chapter shows that by grieving the strangers, the speakers notice their own problems and inner conflicts. Elegies for strangers also express issues of a whole society which are war, capitalism, and racism.
