Czy w biznesie można rozwijać cnoty? Dyskusja wokół możliwości zastosowania etyki cnót Alasdaira MacIntyre’a w etyce biznesu

In my doctoral dissertation, I am trying to answer the question of whether you can develop virtues when engaged in business. This question became a topic of discussion among philosophers and business ethicists after Alasdair MacIntyre published his book After Virtue. In it, MacIntyre describes the figure of the manager and claims that he represents the blurring of manipulative and non-manipulative social relations. Some business ethicists and philosophers considered it tantamount to the thesis that you cannot develop virtue by undertaking business activity. To resolve the question of whether it is possible to develop virtues in business while maintaining the MacIntyre virtue theory framework, I am taking the following steps. First, I define the concepts of business and business ethics, then reconstruct MacIntyre’s theory of virtues. In the next steps, I reconstruct and comment on the main arguments in the discussion on the title question. As my original contribution, I describe Stephen Covey’s concept of character ethics as a perspective “from within” business, which on the one hand is consistent with the main assumptions of MacIntyre’s virtue ethics, and on the other shows that it is possible to develop virtues in business. In the dissertation, I defend the thesis that the development of virtues in business is possible, although it is also difficult due to the factors described by MacIntyre.
