Inoceramus proximus and other inoceramid species of Michael Tuomey from the Cretaceous of Alabama and Mississippi

The originals of four inoceramid species from the Upper Cretaceous of Alabama and Mississippi (USA), reported by Michael Tuomey in 1856 [dated for 1854], were located in the Museum of the Geological Survey of Alabama and the Alabama Natural History Museum in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The material, long regarded as lost during the American Civil War, is illustrated and its taxonomy discussed. The following taxa are presented: Platyceramus proximus, Platyceramus triangularis, Platyceramus biformis and Cordiceramus inflatus. All species described here represent morphotypes distri­buted widely in the Santonian–Campanian boundary interval of the Euramerican biogeographic region and beyond.
