Translation Strategies of Neologisms in the Polish Translation of Brandon Mull's Novel Fablehaven

Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej była analiza neologizmów występujących w anglojęzycznej serii fantasy Fablehaven autorstwa Brandona Mulla oraz ich przekładu na język polski. Neologizmy, będące kluczowym narzędziem kreowania światów przedstawionych w literaturze fantasy, poddano klasyfikacji na podstawie typologii zaproponowanej przez Newmarka, Salich oraz innych badaczy. Praca uwzględnia cztery główne typy neologizmów: słowotwórcze, złożeniowe, semantyczne oraz onomastyczne. Część praktyczna obejmuje przypisanie poszczególnym jednostkom leksykalnym strategii translacyjnych, takich jak domestykacja, foreignizacja, adaptacja czy transpozycja, w oparciu o podejścia takich teoretyków jak Venuti, Nida czy Newmark. Analiza wykazała wyraźną przewagę strategii domestykacyjnych, które tłumacz wykorzystał, by uprościć odbiór tekstu docelowego przy jednoczesnym zachowaniu spójności świata przedstawionego. Praca pokazuje, jak tłumaczenie neologizmów w literaturze fantasy wymaga nie tylko precyzji językowej, ale także wrażliwości kulturowej i kreatywności. Ostateczne wnioski pracy wskazują na tendencję domestykacji neologizmów, oraz podkreślają złożoność decyzji tłumaczeniowych i wskazują na potrzebę dalszych badań w zakresie tłumaczenia elementów fikcyjnych światów.

The goal of this bachelor’s thesis is to investigate the neologisms found in the English-language fantasy series Fablehaven by Brandon Mull and their translation into Polish. Neologisms, which serve as essential tools for world-building in fantasy literature, are categorized according to typologies proposed by Newmark, Salich, and other scholars. The study focuses on four main categories of neologisms: word-formational, compound, semantic, and onomastic. The practical part of the thesis involves assigning specific translation strategies; such as domestication, foreignization, adaptation, or transposition; to each lexical item, based on theoretical approaches developed by Venuti, Nida, and Newmark. The analysis demonstrated a clear dominance of domestication strategies, which the translator employed to simplify the reception of the target text while preserving the coherence of the fictional universe. The thesis demonstrates that the translation of neologisms in fantasy literature requires not only linguistic precision but also cultural sensitivity and creativity. The ultimate conclusions point to a tendency toward the domestication of neologisms and emphasize the complexity of translational decisions, highlighting the necessity for future research into the translation of fictional world elements.
