Narracje archeologiczne - znaczenie i funkcja Karfi na Krecie w świetle 130-letniej historii badań tego stanowiska.

Przedmiotem rozprawy jest obszerna historia badań stanowiska Karfi na Krecie i wynikające z tych badań zmiany w postrzeganiu roli i znaczenia stanowiska. Najpierw przybliżyłam najbardziej znaczące dla Karfi prace wykopaliskowe oraz nieinwazyjne, od odkrycia w 1896 r. do wykopalisk trwających obecnie. Zwróciłam również uwagę na metodykę dotychczasowych prac. Następnie opisałam podstawowe informacje o stanowisku – jego położeniu, odkrytych pozostałościach architektonicznych (budynki, dwa cmentarzyska tolosowe i pozostałości muru obronnego) i znaleziskach ruchomych, w tym ceramice. W ostatnim rozdziale skupiłam się na rekonstrukcji dziejów stanowiska, próbując rozdzielić fakty wynikające z badań i analiz od interpretacji proponowanych przez specjalistów. Przeanalizowałam zależności między położeniem stanowiska a potencjalnymi najazdami piratów. Opisałam charakterystykę Karfi w czasach, gdy pełniło funkcję sanktuarium, a kilkaset lat później mieszkalną. Na koniec podsumowałam najbardziej znaczące zmiany w interpretacjach faktów archeologicznych wraz z postępem badań oraz zastanowiłam się, do odpowiedzi na jakie pytania mogą prowadzić współczesne wykopaliska.

In this study, I presented a comprehensive overview of the research history of the Karfi site on Crete, along with the evolving interpretations of its role and significance. I began by examining the most important excavation and non-invasive research efforts, from the site’s discovery in 1896 to the ongoing excavations. Particular attention was given to the methodologies employed in foregoing investigations. Subsequently, I outlined the key characteristics of the site, including its geographical setting, the uncovered architectural remains (such as buildings, two tholos cemeteries, and remains of a fortification wall), as well as the assemblage of finds, with a particular focus on ceramics. The final chapter was devoted to a reconstruction of the site’s history, with an emphasis on distinguishing observations derived from archaeological data and analysis from the interpretative frameworks proposed by scholars. I examined the strategic location of the site in relation to potential threats from pirate incursions. Furthermore, I discussed the nature of Karfi during its phases of use – as a sanctuary and, several centuries later, as a settlement site. Lastly, I summarized the most significant shifts in the interpretation of the archaeological record that had emerged over the course of successive research phases. I also reflected on the questions that contemporary excavations might answer in the future.
