What Can the Intertextual Paradigm Yield to Translation Studies – An East European Perspective

W artykule dokonuję przeglądu teoretycznych ujęć intertekstualności jako ontologicznej cechy tłumaczenia oraz systematyzuję cele, dla jakich badacze odwołują się do tego paradygmatu – a jest to podejście szeroko reprezentowane w przekładoznawstwie wschodnioeuropejskim. Omawiam różne ujęcia tego zagadnienia i ich użycie w dyskursie, wskazując powinowactwa myśli poszczególnych badaczy. Pokazuję, że kategoria intertekstualności ma w translatologii liczne zastosowania: służy określeniu miejsca przekładu wśród innych typów komunikacji, definiowaniu sposobu istnienia przekładu, apologii tłumaczenia jako pełnoprawnej działalności literackiej i obronie przed zarzutami wtórności, eksplorowaniu związków tłumaczenia z innymi tekstami, konstruowaniu podejść interdyscyplinarnych. W ostatnich latach intertekstualność została także uwzględniona w modelu opisującym proces przekładu.

The aim of the paper is to survey theorizations of intertextuality as an ontological feature of translation, a line of thinking well represented in East European translation studies, and to show what purposes this paradigm has served in translational reflection. I investigate the concept(s) and applications thereof, tracing interrelations between the ideas of various scholars. Intertextuality is shown to have served the following ends: locating translation among other forms of communication, explaining the mode of existence of translation, reclaiming for it the status of a rightful literary activity and defending it from charges of parasitism, probing translations’ interactions with other texts, constructing interdisciplinary approaches. Last but not least, intertextuality has recently been integrated into the very model of the translation process.
