Comparison of the characteristics of the protagonist of the novel 'Catcher in the Rye' in the original and in the Polish translation by Magdalena Słysz

Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie, w jaki sposób główny bohater powieści „Buszujący w Zbożu” został przedstawiony w tłumaczeniu na język polski, i porównanie różnic, które potencjalnie mogły zaistnieć między jego obrazem w obu wersjach językowych. W rozdziale pierwszym omówione zostały kontekst historyczny i kulturowy powstania i odbioru powieści. W ramach wprowadzenia teoretycznego omówione zostało pojęcie idiolektu w językoznawstwie i w literaturze. Przedstawiono też techniki tłumaczeniowe Krzysztofa Hejwowskiego oraz Leszka Berezowskiego, które ułatwiają analizę tłumaczenia. Przeprowadzona w czwartym rozdziale analiza polegała na zestawieniu wybranych fragmentów obu tekstów, porównaniu ich pod względem językowym oraz omówieniu, które cechy lub elementy języka postaci są w danym fragmencie przedstawione i czy różnią się one w zależności od wersji językowej. W wybranych przypadkach podano propozycje własnego tłumaczenia. Analiza wykazała, że polskie tłumaczenie zawiera kilka różnic na tyle znaczących, że mogą zmienić postrzeganie postaci przez polskiego czytelnika.

The aim of this work is to examine how the main character of the novel ‘Catcher in the Rye’ has been portrayed in the Polish translation, and to compare the differences that might have appeared between his image in both language versions. The first chapter discusses the historical and cultural context of the novel’s creation and reception. The theoretical chapter discusses the concept of idiolect in linguistics and literature. Krzysztof Hejwowski and Leszek Berezowski’s translation techniques have also been presented to facilitate the analysis of the translation. The analysis conducted in the fourth chapter consists of the comparison of selected fragments from both texts, and discussion of which elements of the character’s language or personality are presented and wether they differ depending on the language version. In some selected cases, suggestions of a new translation have been provided. The analysis revealed that the Polish translation contains differences significant enough to alter the Polish reader’s perception of the character.
