Translation techniques of culture-bound items in fantasy literature from English into Polish and Spanish in “The Priory of the Orange Tree” by Samantha Shannon

Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie, jakie techniki okazują się najbardziej przydatne w tłumaczeniu literatury fantastycznej na podstawie polskiego i hiszpańskiego przekładu powieści „The Priory of the Orange Tree” Samanthy Shannon. Praca złożona jest z części teoretycznej i praktycznej. Na część teoretyczną składają się trzy rozdziały. Pierwszy dotyczy definicji kultury i tłumaczenia elementów kulturowych. W drugim wymienione i opisane zostały istniejące klasyfikacje technik, metod, procedur i strategii tłumaczeniowych. Natomiast trzeci odnosi się do pojęcia, klasyfikacji i przekładu neologizmów. Na część praktyczną składa się analiza jakościowo-ilościowa zastosowanych przez tłumaczy technik przekładu wybranych elementów kulturowych z powieści. Z przeprowadzonej analizy wynika, że do najczęściej używanych technik tłumaczenia elementów kulturowych należą tłumaczenie dosłowne, pełne zapożyczenie i kalka. W przekładzie neologizmów autorskich polski tłumacz najczęściej decydował się na zastosowanie ekwiwalentu słownikowego, a hiszpański ekwiwalentu opisowego.

The aim of this thesis is to examine which techniques prove most useful when translating fantasy literature on the basis of the Polish and Spanish translations of Samanta Shannon's novel ‘The Priory of the Orange Tree’. The thesis consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part is composed of three chapters. The first deals with the definition of culture, culture-bound items and their translation. In the second, existing classifications of translation techniques, methods, procedures and strategies are listed and described. While the third relates to the concept, classification and translation of neologisms. The practical part includes a qualitative-quantitative analysis of the translation techniques applied by translators to translate selected culture-bound items from the novel. The analysis showed that the most frequently applied techniques for translation of culture-bound items include literal translation, pure borrowing and calque. When translating authorial neologisms, the Polish translator most often opted for dictionary equivalent and the Spanish for descriptive equivalent.
