A study of persuasive techniques in Dave Ramsey’s coaching speeches

Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest analiza wybranych technik perswazyjnych występujących w przemówieniach life coachingowych Dave’a Ramseya oraz ich potencjalnego wpływu na odbiorcę. Składająca się z dwóch rozdziałów część teoretyczna skupia się na przybliżeniu dwóch kluczowych pojęć, jakimi są perswazja oraz nastawienie (ang. attitude). Opisane zostają ich cechy charakterystyczne oraz jak można je odróżnić od często mylonych z nimi terminami, takimi jak propaganda i manipulacja. Ostatni rozdział stanowi część analityczną pracy, w której na podstawie przemówienia pt. “Wealth, Wisdom and the World” (2013) wyodrębnione zostają metody perswazyjne bazujące na klasyfikacji Joan Mulholland (1994). Sześć podrozdziałów zostało opracowane jako klasyfikacja własna autorki pracy i są to między innymi sposób, w jaki mówca nadaje swojej wypowiedzi strukturę, jak znajduje poparcie dla argumentów oraz podejmuje się metod, które nie zawsze są wygodne dla obydwu stron. Na końcu pracy zaprezentowane jest podsumowanie całości pracy oraz wnioski, jakie można z niej wyciągnąć.

The aim of present thesis is to analyse a selection of persuasive techniques found in Dave Ramsey's life coaching speeches and their potential impact on the recipient. Consisting of two chapters, the theoretical part focuses on introducing the two key concepts of persuasion and attitude. It describes their characteristics and how they can be distinguished from terms often confused with them, such as propaganda and manipulation. The final chapter is the analytical part of the thesis, in which persuasive techniques based on Joan Mulholland's (1994) classification are extracted from a speech titled 'Wealth, Wisdom and the World' (2013). Six subsections are developed as the thesis author's own classification and these include how the speaker structures his speech, how he finds support for arguments, undertakes methods that are not always comfortable for both parties and more. At the end of the paper, a summary of the work as a whole and the conclusions that can be drawn from it is presented.
