An Analysis of the Polish Translation of Songs and Spoken Dialogue from the Musical Waitress

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest analizie pierwszego polskiego przekładu musicalu Waitress, którego autorem tekstów i muzyki jest amerykańska kompozytorka Sara Bareilles. Pierwsze dwa rozdziały mają charakter teoretyczny i prezentują krótką historię dziedziny translatoryki, podział metod i strategii tłumaczeniowych, oraz trudności związane z tłumaczeniem spektakli muzycznych. Trzeci i czwarty rozdział stanowią praktyczną analizę przekładu Waitress na potrzeby Teatru Muzycznego Roma w Warszawie, autorstwa Michała Wojnarowskiego. W trzecim rozdziale przedstawiono najczęściej występujące metody i strategie tłumaczeniowe wykorzystywane w przekładzie piosenek, natomiast w ostatnim rozdziale pokazane zostały metody i strategie tłumaczeniowe przydatne przy tłumaczeniu dialogów. Ważnym aspektem był również przekład elementów komicznych oraz elementów kulturowych, charakterystycznych dla kultury amerykańskiej. Analiza polskiego przekładu piosenek i dialogów z musicalu Waitress zakończona została zebranymi wnioskami i spostrzeżeniami dotyczącymi badań nad tłumaczeniami przeznaczonymi na scenę teatrów muzycznych.

The presented thesis is dedicated to the first Polish translation of a smash-hit Broadway musical Waitress with music by Sara Bareilles. Through a short depiction of the discipline of translation studies, its principles and key figures, various strategies and methods of translation, and a practical analysis of different translation techniques that can be found in the translation, the aim of the thesis is to portray difficulties connected with a translation intended for musical theater. The theoretical part comprises the first two chapters: the first is dedicated to the discipline of translation studies and various methods of translation, whereas the second defines musical theater type of translation, as well as analyzes the importance of the criteria of singability and performability and various challenges connected with translating humor and culture-specific elements. The practical part includes the third and the fourth chapter which present the results of an analysis of song lyrics and spoken dialogue from the Polish translation of Waitress, prepared by Michał Wojnarowski. The third chapter includes the methods of translation of song lyrics, whereas the focus of the fourth chapter is put on spoken dialogue. The thesis is concluded with various reflections and conclusions that arose from an analysis of a translation intended for musical theater.
