Une ville plurielle: les espaces montréalais dans Les Nouvelles de Montréal (2017)

Niniejsza praca jest analizą wpływu przestrzeni na człowieka oraz wpływu człowieka na przestrzeń w literaturze kanadyjskiej, w ujęciu geokrytycznym na podstawie zbioru opowiadań Nouvelles de Montréal (2017). Przestrzeń przedstawiona w literaturze jest często czymś więcej niż tylko pejzażem malowanym przez pisarza, ma ona również wpływ na bohaterów, zarówno indywidualnie, jak i na całe grupy czy wręcz społeczności. Zjawisko to działa jednak w obie strony, przestrzeń jest również kreowana przez bohaterów. Praca poświęcona jest zatem analizie reprezentacji przestrzeni we wybranym zbiorze opowiadań oraz funkcji, jaką spełnia ona w literackim obrazowaniu wyzwań, z którymi mierzy się współczesna Kanada. Jest to kraj wielokulturowy i wieloetniczny, w którym ludzie z całego świata spotykają się i tworzą nowe społeczności. Jest to również kraj mierzący się ze spuścizną kolonialną, zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do statusu rdzennych mieszkańców tych obszarów, ale również do stale tlącego się konfliktu między frankofonami oraz anglofonami. W niniejszej pracy przedmiotem badań jest więc sposób, w jakim autorzy opowiadań zawartych w wybranym zbiorze opowiadać starają się przedstawić tak bardzo zróżnicowane społeczeństwo za pośrednictwem literackich odniesień do przestrzeni Montrealu, jednej z największych kanadyjskich metropolii.

This Master thesis is an analysis of the impact of space on humans and the impact of humans on space in Canadian literature, from a geocritical perspective, based on the short story collection Nouvelles de Montréal (2017). The space depicted in literature is often more than just a landscape painted by a writer; it also has an impact on characters, both individually and on entire groups or even communities. However, this phenomenon works both ways, the space is also created by the characters. The work is therefore devoted to analyzing the representation of space in the selected collection of short stories and the function it plays in the literary depiction of the challenges faced by contemporary Canada. It is a multicultural and multiethnic country, where people from all over the world meet and form new communities. It is also a country measuring itself against its colonial legacy, particularly with regard to the status of the Indigenous Peoples of these areas, but also to the ever-smoldering conflict between francophones and anglophones. The subject of this study, therefore, is the way in which the authors of the short stories included in the selected collection attempt to portray such a very diverse society through literary references to the space of Montreal, one of Canada's largest metropolises.

Le présent travail est une analyse de l’influence de l’espace sur l’homme et de l’homme sur l’espace dans la littérature canadienne, basée sur l’approche géocritique et sur le recueil de Nouvelles de Montréal (2017). L'espace décrit dans la littérature est souvent plus qu’un simple paysage peint par l’écrivain ; il exerce également une influence sur les personnages, tant au niveau individuel qu’à celui de groupes entiers, voire de communautés. Cependant, ce mécanisme fonctionne dans les deux sens, l’espace étant également façonné par les personnages. Ainsi, ce mémoire est consacré à l’analyse de la représentation de l’espace dans le recueil de nouvelles de référence et à la fonction que le cadre spatial joue dans la représentation littéraire des défis auxquels le Canada contemporain est confronté. Ce dernier est un pays multiculturel et multiethnique où des personnes du monde entier se rassemblent et créent de nouvelles communautés. C’est aussi un pays qui se mesure à son héritage colonial, notamment en ce qui concerne le statut des peuples autochtones de ces territoires, mais aussi au conflit qui couve toujours entre francophones et anglophones. L’objet de cette étude est donc la manière dont les auteurs de nouvelles incluses dans le recueil sélectionné tentent de dépeindre une société aussi diverse à travers des références littéraires à l’espace de Montréal, l’une des plus grandes métropoles du Canada.
