Political changes in the “New Uzbekistan” since 2016

This thesis investigates the political changes in Uzbekistan since 2016, commonly known as the New Uzbekistan era, alongside a comparative analysis of the presidencies of Islam Karimov and Shavkat Mirziyoyev. To comprehensively assess these changes, the study focuses on examining Uzbekistan under Karimov's presidency and the subsequent tenure of President Mirziyoyev from 2016. It scrutinises the specific policy reforms introduced during both administrations and evaluates their societal and economic impacts. Additionally, the research analyses the evolution of Uzbekistan's international relations and its relationships with neighbouring countries within the context of these political changes. Furthermore, the thesis assesses the level of political repression in Uzbekistan post-2016. Through this comparative analysis, the research aims to delineate the trajectory of political transition in Uzbekistan and assess its degree of success under both leaderships.
