This article examines the ways in which Jewish personal belongings that have been appropriated by gentiles during and in the aftermath of the Holocaust have been identified, demanded back, passed down from generation to generation, commodified, and, finally, collected, traded, and exhibited. Basing analysis on fieldwork and archival research, and focusing on four case studies, the towns of Biłgoraj and Izbica in Poland, and Mir and Iŭje in Belarus, the authors look at the ways in which Holocaust survivors, their descendants, and the local populations have dealt with the mass-scale dispossession of Jewish property that took place in these locales. The article determines whether the Jewish identity of Jewish personal belongings appropriated by local non-Jewish communities during or in the aftermath of Holocaust survived in the postwar communities, in which they have been circulating, and defines what role they played for the postwar relations between Jews and non-Jews.
